
What is a LEC and a RBOC?

LEC is a Local Exchange Company
RBOC is a Regional Bell Operating Company


Basically the terms LEC and RBOC are interchangeable. The LECs were
formed in 1984 when Judge Greene broke up "Ma Bell". Seven LECs or RBOCs
were formed and AT&T. The LECs and RBOCs handle local telephone service
while AT&T and other long distance companies such as MCI and Sprint
handle long distance and international calling. The Telecommunications
Deregulation Act of 1996 allows both LECs and Long Distance Companies to
sell both local, long distance, and international services. And you thought
it was confusing today....just wait and see what the future brings.

still is].
